How to properly wash your hands

Believe it or not, there’s more to washing your hands than giving them a quick rinse with a bit of soap and water. Instead, follow these 6 easy hand-washing steps:

  • Wet your hands using clean, warm water
  • Turn off the tap and apply your soap
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap, making sure you cover the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails too
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds
  • Rinse your hands well with clean water
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or let them air-dry

How long should you wash your hands for?

You should make sure that you scrub your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds – if you need a timer, try singing or humming one round of “Happy Birthday”!

When should you wash your hands?

It's especially important to wash your hands properly if they’re visibly dirty, before eating, after using the restroom, after touching animals, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. By practising good hand hygiene, you can help protect yourself and those around you from illness.

How to use a bar of soap

Using a bar of soap is easy and pretty much the same as using liquid soap. Simply wet your hands using clean water and rub the soap bar over your hands to create a lather. After 20 seconds, rinse off the soap lather well and dry your hands.
