Created by Dr. Schuessler in the 19th century, tissue salts are preparations of the twelve minerals he believed existed in the cells of the human body.
Schuessler believed that imbalances of these minerals could cause illness or ailments and that micro doses were more easily absorbed than those found in mineral supplements.
Therefore tissue salts, sometimes called cell salts, contain just 0.5mcg of each mineral.
Schuessler tissue salts are homeopathically prepared in 6x potencies, higher than traditional homeopathic remedies.
People take Schuessler salts for a range of complaints, from muscle cramps to water retention and skin concerns.
Dr. Schuessler identified twelve minerals that he considered essential for health and wellbeing.
These are:
Calc Fluor thought to aid elasticity in the body. People choose calc fluor to help minimise the risk of varicose veins, ligament damage and muscle strain.
Calc Phos works with albumin to create strong bones and teeth. It may also help with digestion. Many people choose calc phos for indigestion or bone issues.
Calc Sulph to aid removal of waste, cleansing and purifying the blood stream. It is often chosen by those with spot prone skin and other skin complaints.
Ferr Phos found in red blood cells is considered essential for energy. People choose ferr phos to support respiratory health.
Kali Mur to regulate balance of fluids and proper nerve and muscle function. It is often chosen by those experiencing congestion and sore throats.
Kali Phos the principal tissue salt for the nervous system. People experiencing headaches, irritability and nervous tension often choose kali phos.
Kali Sulph for skin, hair and nails. Kali sulph is considered important for recovery from skin ailments.
Mag Phos the anti-spasmodic tissue salt. Mag phos is popularly chosen to ease muscle cramps, twitching and shooting, sudden pains as well as coughing fits.
Nat Mur for water distribution. Nat mur is chosen by those experiencing conditions of excess dryness or moisture, including a runny nose.
Nat Phos regulates acidity. People experiencing minor heartburn, reflux or indigestion may find nat phos useful.
Nat Sulph for water retention, the gall bladder and liver. Nat sulph is often chosen by those who feel queasy or are experiencing water retention.
Silica found in connective tissue, bones and nerve sheathes. It is popular with those seeking healthier looking hair, skin and nails.
Combinations of salts are available for specific complaints and concerns.
There is very little research to support the use of tissue salts. However, many people find them to have a gentle effect on certain symptoms.
Easier to take than traditional tablets, tissue salts are simply dissolved under the tongue or chewed.
This means they are absorbed in the mouth rather than in the stomach or intestinal tract. Up to six tablets a day can be taken to address an imbalance.
Highly diluted, tissue salts have no reported side effects so they are suitable for children and those who are pregnant.
Most tissue salts are suspended in a lactose tablet so may not be suitable for those with a lactose intolerance.
