Once upon a time, CBD was seen as an alternative trend that raised a few eyebrows. Fast forward to today and it’s everywhere – from supplements and skincare to sparkling beverages.

CBD drinks in particular have really taken off. They’re easy, enjoyable and come in all sorts of forms like your morning coffee to a fruity can.

What are CBD drinks?

CBD drinks are made by infusing cannabidiol (CBD) into teas, coffees, sparkling waters and juices.1 Unlike THC (the compound that creates a ‘high’ in cannabis), CBD is non-psychoactive and legal in the UK.2,3 That means you can enjoy them as part of your daily routine without the effects associated with cannabis.4

What are the side effects of CBD?

Like any supplement, CBD may cause mild side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth or digestive changes – especially if you take more than recommended.5,6 It can also interact with some medications, so always check with your GP before adding CBD drinks to your routine.7

If you take too much CBD,8 you might experience the following:
  • drowsiness
  • diarrhoea
  • decreased appetite
  • changes in your mood (like feeling more irritable or agitated)
The FSA set an acceptable daily intake of 0.15mg/kg/body weight, which equates to 10mg for a 70kg adult (for products with 98% purity).

The following people should avoid CBD products:9
  • children under the age of 18
  • pregnant and breastfeeding people
  • prospective parents trying for a baby
  • people taking medication

How many CBD drinks should you have a day?

The FSA recommends a maximum daily intake of 10mg CBD for a healthy adult (70kg).10

That generally means sticking to one CBD drink per day, depending on the product’s strength. Always check the label and follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

Other ways to enjoy CBD

Not a drink person? No problem. You’ll also find CBD in oilsgummies, capsules, chocolates, sprays and even skincare.

The final say

Whether you’re a coffee lover (why not learn about mushroom coffee too?) or a sparkling water fan, there’s a CBD drink to suit your taste.

Convenient, tasty and varied, they’re a great way to explore CBD as part of your lifestyle – just remember to keep within the recommended daily limit.
