We need a variety of vitamins and minerals to help keep our bodies healthy and working properly, including biotin – one of eight B vitamins that form the vitamin B complex.1-3

Here we take a closer look at what biotin (vitamin B7) is, and why you may want to consider adding a biotin supplement to your routine. Discover our top biotin supplements as chosen by H&B customers here.

A bit of background on biotin

Part of the vitamin B family, biotin is also known as vitamin B7.1 Biotin helps the body to make fatty acids and maintain healthy hair, skin and nails.1-4

Like the rest of the B vitamins, biotin is water soluble.1,2water-soluble vitamin is a vitamin that dissolves in water.5 This means that when it enters the body, it dissolves – and because of this, we can’t store excess amounts for later use.5 Any excess amounts are usually flushed out in your urine rather than kept around.6

Because water-soluble vitamins aren’t stored for long, your levels need to be replenished regularly through your diet. Think of them as the ‘use it or lose it’ nutrients!

The good news is that biotin deficiency is rare and biotin is found in lots of different foods as well as being made by the bacteria in our gut.3,6 Plus, the vast majority of people can get enough of this essential nutrient from their diet, as it occurs naturally in a wide variety of foods, such as:2-4
  • organ meats
  • fruits and vegetables (in small amounts)
  • fish
  • soybeans
  • eggs
  • nuts
  • oysters
  • seeds
So, if it’s relatively rare to have a biotin deficiency, what are the benefits of taking a biotin supplement?

The potential benefits of biotin supplements

It might be small, but biotin is mighty – this multi-tasking vitamin supports your body in a whole host of day-to-day functions. In fact, biotin contributes to:
  • normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • normal functioning of the nervous system
  • normal macronutrient metabolism
  • normal psychological function
  • the maintenance of normal hair
  • he maintenance of normal mucous membranes
  • the maintenance of normal skin
While you should be able to get all the biotin you need from a balanced diet, if you’re concerned about not getting enough vitamin biotin through your diet, you can take a biotin supplement.

There are many potential benefits of taking biotin supplements, such as:
  • an easy way to get biotin – it can be hard to keep track of how much biotin you’re getting each day particularly if you don’t eat a varied diet or have dietary restrictions, so some people choose to take biotin supplements in the same way they take multivitamins to make sure they hit their recommended intake
  • managing biotin deficiency – though rare, biotin deficiency does exist.6 For example, people with genetic disorders and those who eat a lot of raw egg whites are at risk of a biotin deficiency (interestingly, egg whites contain contain a protein called avidin, which binds to biotin, preventing your body from absorbing it properly).6,8 In addition, pregnancy is associated with a marginal biotin deficiency.6 However, it’s important to get medical advice if you’re concerned about deficiency to ensure you get the right amount for you
  • high dosage – some multivitamins include biotin, but they might contain a low dosage. Some people have a genetic condition that requires them to take a high dosage of this nutrient, in this case, they might be recommended biotin supplements to make sure they’re getting enough6

Best biotin supplements

If you’re concerned that you might have a biotin deficiency, the NHS states that there are unlikely to be any harmful effects of taking 0.9mg of biotin in supplements per day.3

It’s important to know that high doses of biotin can influence some blood test results so always ensure you tell your doctor about any biotin supplements you are taking.2

So, whether you want a supplement that’s specifically designed to nourish your body with biotin and nothing else or a multivitamin that contains biotin, here’s our top five biotin supplements:
