If you’ve been within about a thousand miles of a gym lately, chances are you’ve heard of creatine – the supplement said to improve endurance and make for a more powerful workout.

Is any of it true? And what’s the best creatine for your workout?

Sweet-style gummies or a budget-friendly staple, discover our favourite creatine picks for your next exercise sesh...

What’s creatine?

Creatine is a compound found naturally in our muscle and brain cells. It helps produce our body’s main energy source, a substance called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).1,2

We use creatine for brain function and whenever we contract our muscles – so it can deplete quicker than usual during intense workouts.

Because of this, some people take creatine supplements to help replace the creatine you naturally lose and help enhance strength as well as recovery during high-intensity exercise.1

You can get some creatine from meat and fish.1 But if you don’t eat these (ie, if you’re vegetarian or vegan) it might be difficult to get creatine in your diet.

What are the benefits of creatine?

The main pro is its role in producing ATP. This sends energy to our muscle tissues, supporting performance during successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise.1

And it’s not all about muscles: because creatine’s present in our brain cells (and our brain uses a quarter of our total energy) research suggests it might have cognitive benefits.2 Some studies have linked creatine supplementation to better memory in older adults, but further research is needed to fully support this.3

*The beneficial effects are obtained with a daily intake of 3g creatine.

Time for a new flavour? Try Blue Raspberry

Switch up your usual with a burst of blue raspberry. Add tang to smoothies and shakes, as well as 4.25g creatine per serving.

It’s ideal for those who like their routine – shake up and hit the gym. Since creatine’s been shown to increase physical performance in short-term, high intensity exercise, it’s a great swap for those days you’re hitting circuits or weights instead of a long jog.1

Mix one scoop (5g) with 250ml water and drink once or twice a day. The only downside: it’ll have you dreaming of old-school sweet shops.

£21.00

£4.20/100 g

Creatine that packs a (fruit) punch

Another one for those who like to keep it simple: USN’s creatine monohydrate is just that. Add it to your routine without ‘doubling up’ or disrupting your daily vits.

But that’s not to say it’s boring! We’ve chosen the summery Red Fruit Punch flavour, but there’s Tropical Thunder too. Sip on a sunny workout day and you could almost be on holiday...

At 28p per serving, it’s a cost-effective way to get your creatine too. Mix 5g with 250ml cold water and enjoy.

The final say

Found your new pre-workout routine? Fruity, with added vits or plain and simple – creatine could be the next step in your performance.
