You won’t hear that kind of glowing endorsement from a nutritionist every day, so we knew we had to take note. Here's why your body needs magnesium and what happens if you don’t get enough.

What is magnesium good for?

“From tackling tiredness to supporting your bones and muscles, there are lots of ways that good levels of magnesium can benefit our bodies,” says Madalena. “Having the recommended daily amount of magnesium helps to balance your fluids and electrolytes,2,3 and reduce tiredness and fatigue.”4 It also keeps your nerves functioning and fuels electrical activity within the heart and the brain.5

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. Your body can’t make it, so you must get magnesium through the foods you eat (ideally) or through supplementation. It can be found in a wide variety of foods – the amount of magnesium suggested by the NHS is 300mg a day for men and 270mg a day for women.6

What causes a magnesium deficiency and how can I avoid it?

Diet is usually to blame for a magnesium deficiency.7 It happens when people aren't eating enough magnesium-rich foods.8 If you’re looking to ensure a magnesium-packed plate, you can find it in leafy greens such as spinach, nuts like cashews and almonds, seeds, eggs, seaweed and kelp. Where possible, choose organic varieties (which are grown in soil) as these tend to be higher in magnesium.9

How do our bodies use magnesium?

Wondering how getting a good balance of magnesium could support your body? Here are some of the main reasons why we need this mineral:

It supports energy release from food

Magnesium plays an important role in energy metabolism, the process your body uses to convert nutrients from food into energy.10,11 It also helps activate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that delivers energy to cells throughout the body. Magnesium binds to ATP to support its function, making it essential for energy production at a cellular level.12 Because of this, low magnesium levels have been linked to symptoms like tiredness and fatigue.13

Magnesium helps your body build normal bones

Magnesium is found mostly in your bones, but also in other tissues like your muscles and joints.14 Your bones rely on magnesium to stay strong. Magnesium supports calcium metabolism (how your body processes calcium). A long-term deficiency in magnesium is linked to poorer bone health, which can cause osteoporosis.15

Magnesium supports muscle function

Magnesium enables the relaxation of the muscles, which is vital because your muscles are constantly contracting and expanding – and magnesium is what enables the relaxing of the muscles.16,17

This could explain why muscle aches, cramps and twitches (like those irritating eye twitches some of us experience) are a common symptom of a magnesium deficiency. Following on from this, it’s not difficult to see why magnesium glycinate may help relieve constipation, as it helps your digestive muscles and gastrointestinal tract to relax,18 helping you pass stools more easily. A study from Japan showed that there was an association between those with low magnesium intake in their diets and increased levels of constipation, however more research is needed to determine if one causes the other.19

Magnesium may help to keep your heart beating

As your heart is one of the most important muscles in the body, it’s no surprise that magnesium may be important to support this beating muscular organ too.20 Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and plays a role in muscle contraction, including the heart muscle, according to current research.21 A prominent ongoing heart study reported in 2022 that low magnesium is associated with the development of irregular heartbeat.22

Magnesium keeps the nervous system working properly

Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system, including its role in neurotransmission and muscle contraction, such as the contraction of the heart muscle.23 It’s involved in processes that help nerve cells communicate and muscles respond appropriately to signals.23

Some studies have explored potential associations between magnesium status and factors such as stress or mood. However, findings are not conclusive, and these relationships are still being researched.24 Current evidence doesn’t establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.25,26

What are the signs of magnesium deficiency?

“Early signs of a magnesium deficiency include fatigue, loss of appetite, cramps, muscle twitches and an irregular heartbeat,” Madalena says. While a severe deficiency is rare, many people in the UK (up to 60%) don’t meet the recommended daily intake,27 particularly young women,28 as their bodies use more. This is because oestrogen actually enhances the amount of magnesium your body requires, especially around ovulation or taking oral contraceptives, when oestrogen levels are highest.27 “The harmful effects of low magnesium levels won’t happen overnight, but over the years, you might notice a lack of energy, slower muscle repair and weaker bones in later years. If you do have these symptoms, it's important to speak to your doctor so you can get your levels checked and they can rule anything else out,” she says.

How does magnesium support exercise in warmer weather?

Magnesium could play a role in helping your body keep up with exercise, supporting energy production, muscle function and fluid balance.29 When you’re active, your body shifts magnesium around to help your muscles and keep everything working smoothly.29 In warmer weather, this becomes even more relevant, as you tend to sweat more, which can increase magnesium losses and slightly raise your daily needs.29

Research suggests exercise alone may increase magnesium requirements by around 10–20% – and this effect may be more noticeable when you’re training in the heat.29 If your magnesium levels are on the low side, it can make exercise feel harder and put more stress on the body, while getting enough helps support performance and recovery.29

Can you get too much magnesium?

Most people can get all the magnesium they need from a varied, balanced diet, so supplements aren’t always necessary. If you do choose to take one, it’s a good idea to stick to recommended amounts, as taking too much could be harmful. Keeping your intake from supplements at 400mg a day or less is generally considered safe.6 However, taking too much can upset your stomach and cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.30 Regularly having more than recommended – such as overusing magnesium-based laxatives – can lead to ongoing diarrhoea, dehydration and loss of important electrolytes.30

What foods are rich in magnesium?

You can get magnesium from lots of everyday foods. Good sources include green leafy vegetables, beans and lentils, nutsseeds and whole grains. Some drinks also contain magnesium.7 It’s also sometimes added to foods like breakfast cereals and other fortified products, helping you support your intake a little more easily.7
