Yet with so many different sunscreen formulations out there, it can be tricky to figure out which is best. You might have wondered: what’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen? And why do some people prefer one or the other? Here, consultant dermatologist and skin health educator Dr Zainab Laftah explains everything you need to know about mineral-based sunscreen.

What is mineral sunscreen?

It may seem slightly confusing, but mineral sunscreens contain inorganic UV filters, while chemical sunscreens contain organic UV filters. The most common filters in mineral sunblocks are zinc oxide and titanium oxide. Chemical sunblocks are usually formulated with a mixture of three to five filters such as avobenzone, oxybenzone and cinnamates.2

How does mineral sunscreen work?

Mineral sunscreens are sometimes called ‘physical’ blockers because they sit on the surface of the skin and help block UV radiation. “They primarily absorb UV light, while also reflecting and scattering a small amount,3 whereas chemical sunscreens mainly absorb UV and convert it into heat,” Dr Laftah says.4

“Mineral sunscreens start working as soon as they’re applied, whereas chemical sunscreens need time to bind to the skin.” However, both are best applied 15 minutes before going out into the sun and you always need to use a reputable sunscreen that’s been tested for efficacy.

What are the benefits of mineral sunscreen?

It works very quickly by forming a barrier against UV rays, whereas chemical sunscreen needs around 15 minutes to absorb into the skin and take effect.6 However, to be on the safe side all sunscreens should be applied about 15 minutes before sun exposure. According to recent research, tinted mineral sunscreens containing iron oxide have an extra benefit, too. By blocking blue light, they may help to reduce dark spots caused by hyperpigmentation.7

Myth-busting mineral sunscreen

Here are three commonly held but incorrect beliefs about mineral based sunblock:
  • they all leave a white cast: in the past, mineral based sunscreens had a reputation for being thick, hard to apply and leaving a chalky white residue, especially on darker skin tones. Thanks to modern nanotechnology (using extremely tiny mineral particles), both gel and cream formulations are much lighter and many are tinted to further reduce the white cast
  • they don’t work as well as chemical sunscreens: mineral sunblocks are just as effective as their chemical equivalents
  • they contain mineral oil: zinc and titanium oxide are mineral ingredients, not oils. Mineral oil, which some people choose to avoid because it can clog pores, isn’t usually found in mineral sunscreens

Mineral sunscreen and skin tones

“Traditionally, mineral sunscreens were viewed less favorably because they tended to leave a white cast, especially on those with darker skin types,” Dr Laftah says – but that’s no longer the case. Nowadays, many are formulated using nanotechnology, meaning the mineral particles are extremely small and spread more easily, making them look more transparent on the skin. “They come in gel as well as cream formulations and are often tinted to reduce some of that white cast even further. That was a limiting factor in the past but it’s not as much of an issue anymore.”

How to apply mineral sunscreen

Whatever type of sunscreen you use, it’s very important to apply enough product to ensure adequate protection – around six to eight teaspoons to cover your body.8 For adults, Dr Laftah recommends at least half a teaspoon of sunscreen for your face, neck and ears, and at least six to eight teaspoons to cover the whole body.

  1. Ensure your skin is completely clean and dry
  2. Add small dots of the sun cream all over the areas that are going to be exposed (don’t forget your scalp), then gently rub in
  3. Still got a white cast? Keep on rubbing it in. Let it sink in for 15 minutes before applying any makeup 
  4. Re-apply every two hours or after swimming or sweating

Things to consider when choosing mineral sunscreen

Some mineral sunscreens wash off more easily, so if, for example, you’re very active or go swimming a lot on holiday, you may prefer to use a chemical sunblock or cover up with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing, which is clothing designed to help protect your skin from UV and UVA rays.9

What is considered a chemical sunscreen?

A chemical sunscreen uses active ingredients like avobenzone, octinoxate or oxybenzone to absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin.4 These formulas tend to be lightweight, invisible on the skin and easy to layer under makeup – making them a popular everyday choice.
 

Is a mineral sunscreen better?

Not necessarily – it depends on your skin and preferences. Mineral (or physical) sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to sit on the skin. They’re often recommended for delicate skin but they can feel thicker.
 

Can mineral sunscreen irritate eyes?

Any sunscreen can migrate into the eyes if it’s not set properly, so choosing a well-formulated product and applying it carefully (especially around the eye area) can help minimise discomfort.
 

The final say

There are pros and cons to both mineral and chemical sunscreens but the best option is one that you feel comfortable using.

“I generally tend to recommend mineral sunscreen over chemical sunscreen as it’s less likely to cause irritation,” says Dr Laftah, but she recognises that with more chemical products on the market, people may be more likely to find a formula they like. “Ultimately, it's the application that's key and if you don't like the way it feels on your skin, you're less likely to use it. It's just about finding the sunscreen that works for you.”
